History
Originally called “Eastrington Feast”, the celebration held during the
third week in June is steeped in
over 100 years of history. Indeed, the
first official show is thought to have been held in 1892, when the
event extended
throughout an entire week, and was probably an expansion of even earlier
events.
Albeit
in a limited form, the village continued to hold its feast celebrations
throughout the First World War,
returning to its fuller and more
agricultural format by 1920. During the 1920s the show moved to its
present location, the Playing Field on Howden Road, however, the onset
of the Second World War
saw the event put on hold until 1950.
Since
the War, Eastrington Show has continued to evolve and grow, reflecting
somewhat the changing
character of the village and face of agriculture.
Indeed, whilst in 2001 no agricultural show could be held
as a result of
Foot and Mouth Disease, the show managed to maintain its presence with
the determined
efforts of the Show Committee members. Despite the
washout in 2007, when the show had to be cancelled
at the eleventh hour, Eastrington Agricultural Society held the 100th
show in 2009.
